A slipped disc is when a soft cushion of tissue between the bones in your spine pushes out. It's painful if it presses on nerves. Some herniated discs cause no symptoms. Others can irritate nearby nerves and result in pain, numbness or weakness in an arm or leg.
It usually gets better slowly with rest, gentle exercise and painkillers. Not every disc needs intervention. When required, treatment includes medication, physiotherapy and possibly surgery.
